Dealing with Unexpected Leaks this Holiday Season

The Christmas holidays are a special time of year where family, friends, and loved ones come together to celebrate. For those dealing with incontinence, however, the holiday season can be a particularly challenging time. Unexpected leaks can occur at any time, making it difficult to enjoy all the festivities. Here are a few tips to help you manage your incontinence this holiday season so you can focus on what’s important – enjoying time with your loved ones.

Wear Absorbent Products

Be sure to wear the right absorbent product for your level of incontinence. If you’re unsure which product is right for you, speak to your GP. They will be able to assess your individual needs and recommend the best product for you. There are a variety of absorbent products available, from pads to briefs. Wearing the right absorbent product will give you the confidence to relax and enjoy your holiday celebrations without worry.

Stay Hydrated

Staying hydrated is important for overall health, but it’s also crucial for managing incontinence. When your body is properly hydrated, your urine will be less concentrated and less likely to cause leaks. The key is to drink enough fluid throughout the day so that you produce less urine overall. Aim for six to eight glasses of water per day, or more if you are physically active. Avoid excessive alcoholic beverages and caffeine as these can contribute to dehydration and may irritate your bladder.

Don’t Hold It

When you feel the urge to urinate, it’s important not to hold it in. Holding urine in can lead to urinary tract infections or bladder spasms, both of which can worsen incontinence symptoms. If you’re unable to get to a bathroom right away, try doing some pelvic floor muscle exercises (also known as Kegel exercises) to hold in your urine until you can find a toilet. Regularly doing these exercises can also help strengthen your pelvic floor muscles and reduce incontinence symptoms in the long term.

The festive season is a time for fun and excitement. By following these simple tips, you can manage your incontinence and have a Christmas to remember.
